Our friend
Greg Kevakian Executive Directorof Broken Wing, a
bird rescue in AZ, has given us the permission to
share with you this great video of one of their
residents, Mickey. The below is a quote from Greg.
"Another reason
why I love these birds so much. For the past few
weeks I had to undergo medical treatment that causes
me to be nauseous and tired. Every time, when I come
home, Mickey is the first to come out of her cage
and runs to me saying, "It's OK!" I finally captured
the moment on video. Have a great day every one!" --

| As you can see this is Gabby and Mom.
Gabby loves to fluff up his feathers to show off.
Fluffing them up is a form of protection for him as
well, if you check out
Gabby's photo
album
you can see how he does this nifty little trick.
There have been times like when we were visiting our
friends the Bryants in Georgia, and Gabby filled his
wing-a-bago (a clear plastic cage he travels in)
with every feather he had, when a pit bull wanted to
check him out. That pit bull frozen in his tracks
and went the other way, he wanted nothing to do with
what ever that funning thing was in that plastic
cage. That was one time I really need to have a
camera. |

How Gabby came
into our lives. We had an Umbrella Cockatoo named
Precious and a Nanday Conure named Ozzy, needing
more food for them we stopped by a pet store we were
passing and had never been in before. There Gabby
was swinging upside down and talking his head off to
me. I could hardly pull myself away, I sadly told
him as I left I had 2 birds at home I had to care
for and if it wasn't for that I would take him in a
New York minute. Little did I know at the time my
Precious was dying with PDD a little know disease
that kills entire flocks of birds and is only
transmitted by touch. There is an entire research
facility in Athens, GA devoted to it's study.
|
| |
|
About five months later I lost my beloved Precious, it
was heart breaking I had gotten her shortly after
losing my Mother. Suddenly I remembered Gabby and my
promise. I knew I had to find him, the pet store had
moved but with a little research I found it. Much to
my surprise they still had Gabby. Our first meeting
was historic, he climbed on my shoulder whipped my
glasses and threw them on the floor, immediately put
his beak against my nose and stared into my eyes. I
am sure most people would have panicked, but I felt
fully at ease with him. |
|
|
It was a good thing I
was sitting down when they quoted me his price. But
Gabby had already closed the deal, it was a birdie
close not a puppy dog close. I spent the entire
evening into the next morning rolling change from
our water jug change jar. After all that was set
aside for very special occasions such as this one.
There was still one other element we had to clear up
before bringing Gabby into the house and that was
the cause of Precious death. I had to bring her to
the vet and have shipped to Miami where they would
do an autopsy and find it was the PDD that took her
life. Once this was determined Ozzie was put into
quarantine for 3 years, the birds would not be
allowed to touch each other for that period of time.
That was quite easy since they had their own cages.
Ozzie was GWT's bird and Gabby was mine.

Birds are
unique. Each breed has it's only special colors and habits.
|
|
Sometimes when we chew things up it is because when we
are in the wild, that is what we do. My Mom has learned I don't
always understand what I should and shouldn't chew. If left to
my own means, I love popping keys off the computer keyboard, all those
neet things that stick up on phones and remote controls. I don't
understand why she doesn't think it is fun, I sure do. She even
had to get new chairs because I loved eating the cane backs, now
I can't because they are cast aluminum and I can't eat that. |
| |
|
My
Mom knows I am a lot of work and will be with her for up to
another 70+ years. That is longer than most humans are married.
She tells me the joy I give her out weighs the work. When people
see me and how well I interact with them, they want to find one
of my cousins and bring them home. Mom goes out of her way to
tell people who get that excited that it is a lifetime
commitment to have a bird like me. I am a baby who will never
grow up, I will always need care and LOTS of attention. And if
they can't commit to that than don't get one of my cousins or
any other bird for that matter. Even little parakeets live to be
quite old and can bring lots of joy and companionship to their
owners. You see most of us birds live far longer than dogs and
cats. We are different from them because we find security in a
flock or family, security is very important to us. So when we
are caged and left alone a lot it is very hard on us.
|
| |
|
Sadly out over 75% of
all the birds purchased are given away, returned,
let loose and even killed. We want people to really
think about the commitment before getting any
animal, but really birds because most people just
look at our beauty and do see beyond that. Many of
us scream to welcome the day or bid the day good-by,
but that is what we do in the wild so it just comes
naturally. This is true mostly with larger birds
like me. Mom is really happy that is one habit I
don't have, but there I times I scream because that
is just what I do. I sometimes scream to let Mom
know someone is at the door or just come and get me.
We have seen to many birds in the pet shops returned
with feathers pulled and just plain broken hearted.
It takes everything in us not to build an aviary and
bring them all home.

| What you think
only dogs can eat bones. I can stripe the
meat off the bone better then any doggie you
have seen. When I am done it is neat and
clean, but if you want to see one of my
favorite treats watch the video below. |

This
is Peaches, she was rescued by Billie Faye.
She was in this condition when Billie got
her.
Peaches
was hatched in CT she is around 20 years
old. She has been in their family since
2000.
When
Billie received a call "come get this bird
now or it will be dead!"* ...She was living
in MA and immediately went and got Peaches.
Bille says she loves her to pieces but
Peaches loves her hubby and tolerates her.
Peaches talks by whistling ...loves to pull
her hair. |
 |
 |
| Billie
wanted to share some of Peaches beak work,
know as inferior decorating. |
|
|
Those of you, who are not
familiar with these beautiful creatures, you must
wonder way a bird would look like Peaches. This is
what happens when they are under stress. There are
times disease can cause a bird to pull their
feathers out. Gabby had health problems when he went
after his chest feathers. I still have to keep a
close eye on him.
It has taken a lot
of patience and working with to get him to sit in a
warm bath with baking soda. Gabby has a lot of
dander and giving him frequent baths has cut way
down on any scratching. He is now regrowing what he
scratched & pulled off. |
